An interview with Beau Mannix
Q: Tell us a little about yourself?
I grew up in Hobart, Tasmania and moved to Brisbane in 1999 on a swimming scholarship. I have represented Australia in swimming (backstroke) at a World Championship level. I retired from swimming in 2002 and pursued my passion in acupuncture. I completed by Bachelors in Health Science Acupuncture at the Australian College of Natural Medicine in 2005. I then went on to complete further advanced training in 3 separate hospitals in Nanning China. I have been fascinated and passionate about acupuncture ever since. I worked in other clinics before opening Positive Balance Natural Health in 2006 and I enjoy every moment of running my own clinic. I also started lecturing acupuncture to future students in 2007 and continue to do this today.
Q: What got you into acupuncture?
I had a bad elbow injury from swimming and I tried many different treatments from physio, massage and cortisone injections but nothing worked. Finally, the physiotherapist suggested that I try acupuncture so I gave it a go because I had nothing to lose. I was very skeptical about acupuncture because nothing else had produced lasting results. After just three treatments, I was fully recovered. The pain has never returned and I was able to compete at a higher level. I was so impressed with the results of the treatment, that I started studying acupuncture after I stopped swimming.
Q: What interests and fascinates you about acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a unique science that has been used for thousands of years and produces empirical results. I am always amazed and surprised each day by the results achieved through the use of acupuncture. Successful results can be achieved in treating various ailments from injuries, fertility, gynaecology, internal medicine, external medicine, musculoskeletal problems, immunity, cardiovascular and the list goes on. It still fascinates me that the ancient Chinese came up with such a sophisticated medical model that remains largely unchanged in 3,000 years. These results were achieved many years ago through thousands of observations are only now being shown to work with western medical tests such as MRI’s and blood tests.
Q. Why do you love what you do?
I love to help people and the greatest reward I receive is helping couples who are unable to fall pregnant to naturally conceive a healthy baby using acupuncture. When they bring their beautiful baby into my clinic to say hello, I know that I have the best job in the world. I get to meet a wide diversity of people and am touched by every interaction I have with each of them.
Q. What are some of your proudest moments as a professional?
Prior to acupuncture I was ranked fifth in the world for 50m backstroke. It took hours of practice and motivation. Swimming taught me discipline, focus and achieving results and I use these skills daily in my work.
In my business now the proudest moment is daily when I get to see what acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can achieve. I love to share in people’s success in achieving their health goals what ever they maybe.
Q: Why would I come see you?
I take a holistic approach when I listen to your story and consider all options on a physical, mental and emotional level. I take a detailed medical history and customize a unique treatment especially for your needs. No two treatments are the same, I base it on your current signs and symptoms. I include acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, dietary therapy, massage and supplements in my treatments in order to balance the body. I use the latest clinical research in my treatments in order to achieve proven results.
I have undertaken specialist training from the leading fertility & pregnancy experts in my field. I also attend seminars and workshops regularly to stay abreast of the latest changes and innovations. Last year I travelled to America to study with some prominent practitioners and educators at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine
I have flexible working hours to suit today’s busy lifestyles with after hours appointments and I am available on Saturdays. I fit my treatments around your IVF appointments and work with your IVF specialist. I am easily contactable and very approachable.
I want to able to work with you to come up with a program that will suit you and get the best results for you.
Q: What do you like doing in your free time?
With running a business I don’t really get a lot of free time, but I do cherish it when I get it. I am constantly keeping up with the latest research in my field. The fertility industry changes so fast and I need to be on the cutting edge of this so I can provide the best level of service for my patients. I also teach at the Endeavour College of Natural Health passing on my specialty and knowledge to other future generation of acupuncturists.
I love spending quality time with my friends and my pets (I have 2 dogs and 2 cats). I love relaxing in front of the TV or watching movies, dining out with friends and enjoying good food, travelling to exotic places around the world and constantly learning about new things, especially acupuncture.
